Color Ideas for Game VFX

When working on VFX, having a balanced color kit is truly a make-or-break for an effect, together with shape and timing.

To level up your game effects, introducing color gradients in the texture, like in house engine games such as Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft, is the straight-forward approach.

Another idea would be using LUT in engine direction or setting up a multiplied or lerp color gradient for the main texture input.

A famous Chinese VFX teacher, ppx, is showing ways with RGB color channels in the Unity engine, which is very mobile-friendly and something for me to adapt to.

Whichever method you decide on, stick with it and run through a checklist before building a new VFX for games and your portfolio.

More to come.
